April 29, 2012 Abercrombie Family Hike
On Sunday, April 29th, 2012, Todd Abercrombie, a board member of the Friends of Rocky Glen, led a family reunion of about 30 people on a private hike of Rocky Glen. There were 4 generations of the family represented ranging in age from 2 to 80 years old. This family shared memories of visiting the area years ago. Here is their story:
Rocky Glen has held a special place in my family’s heritage for over 70 years. My Grandma on my mom’s side actually hiked there when she was young (not sure of the year) and my parents hiked there when they were engaged back in 1951. They took us on hikes there when we were little and we LOVED it. I remember her teaching us how important it was to preserve the area. She would always bring along a garbage sack to carry out any litter we found while hiking.
So when my mom saw the article in the Journal Star about Rocky Glen she was thrilled to find out that through the “Friends of Rocky Glen” group that hikes to the Glen were possible.
I thought that it would be an awesome thing to do in honor of her 80th birthday and was thrilled that Todd was able to accommodate our large group of her kids, grandkids and some of her great grandkids (yes, 4 generations) on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The rain didn’t dampen any spirits that day. It brought back lots of memories for us and we are really grateful for what your group is doing. You really made my mom’s day and gave our family another wonderful memory of the Glen.
Blessings, Rachel
